Current events troubles

The frontpage and the events pages treat 'current events' differently. The frontpage will show them on the first day (but not on the later days of a multi-day event), the 'past events' page will not show them until the first day has passed. The 'upcoming events' page will not show them.

I'm pondering if an event that is happening right now is a 'past event', an 'upcoming event', neither, or both?
