I decided to go with the
if (ex && (ZEND_CALL_INFO(ex) & ZEND_CALL_CODE)) {variant after all as it is consistent in error message with the existing errors; otherwise withif (!ex || (ZEND_CALL_INFO(ex) & ZEND_CALL_CODE)) {the error is inconsistent.
