DOC: Doc version slider is broken (no options)

The cause seems to be moving the versions.json file from the website directory to the docs directory in https://github.com/pandas-dev/pandas/pull/53029/files. @mroeschke I think the file should be moved backed to where it was. Anything I'm missing?

So I remember why this was added here:

In pydata-sphinx-theme, json_url for these versions needs to be discoverable within doc/ since the url is specified as https://pandas.pydata.org/versions.json https://pydata-sphinx-theme.readthedocs.io/en/stable/user_guide/version-dropdown.html#configure-switcher-json-url

In main, is https://pandas.pydata.org/versions.json an allowed URL route?

I think you're misunderstanding the problem. There is no reason to have the file in the docs directory, what the documentation says it's to make sure to point to the latest version of the docs if you do. Otherwise, if you change the last version but not the old one, the fetched file will still be the same, and the dropdown values won't be updated.

The settings seems to be fine, pointing at the right location of the file, the problem is that the file is not there. I see you deleted the branch of the PR you opened, which I think it was correct. I opened a new PR with the same change. Let's give it a try with our preview system, I'm quite sure it'll work just fine.
