Encoding issues. Unicode and utf-8 conflict... utf-8 converting everything back to 3 bits perhaps, dunno? Those seems to be Chinese named folders.

What is your Magento version? Did you set file system ownership and permissions as recommended?

To give more specific information of my problem

My problem is Magento 2 doesn’t automatically index as I expect from the cron job. I currently have to SSH in and re-index using ‘php bin/magento indexer:reindex’ , which is fine for me but not for my customers

The server is my own which I am sharing between several of my customers. So I have root login but will need to keep the customers ‘jailed’. The server is almost new with only 1 other WordPress site. I am hoping to put several Magento 2 installs on it.

I suspect the cron job is running but something else is stopping the reindexing from happening.

There are no errors (empty) in magento.cron.log or setup.cron.log

In update.cron.log im getting:-

In debug.log im getting this error:-

And in the cPanel error log im getting this error:-

I don’t know if all these errors relate to my re-indexing problem. I have been Googling permutations of these error messages for the last few days trying to find a solution to no avail.

Im sure my paths to php.ini and the binary are correct. I have almost memorised http://devdocs.magento.com/guides/v2.0/config-guide/cli/config-cli-subcommands-cron.html by now.

When I run the commands from a command line as root from the top directory they work fine with no errors at all, but it still doesn’t re-index

I have even tried setting up a second copy of Magento 2 on the same server and putting all folders to chmod 777 to prove if it is permissions related, but that didn’t work either. It still wasn’t re-indexing.

Any help/insight anyone can provide will be hugely appreciated.

I have replicated this issue on v2.0.7 and despite a variety of attempts at modifying the cron jobs in order to circumvent this issue, I continue to see the following error:

update-cron.ERROR: Cron readiness check failure! Found following non-writable paths        [] []

Can this issue be assigned to a developer?

Me too! In this days i tried some workarounds (user permissions, dir mod,
missing softwares) but without any appreciable result.

There seems to be a bug in update/app/code/Magento/Update/CronReadinessCheck.php that prevents proper logging. We had the same issue and it was because of a statistics directory where magento did not have write permissions for, however the log was empty (e.g. not showing the directories or files it could not write to or read from). The following code can be used as a replacement for CronReadinessCheck.php that gives proper logging output (I couldn't find the file on github to create a pull request, where is it?):

I don't think properly setting up your cronjobs fixes the re-index issue/warning. The crons don't seem to do any reindexing, you have to manually do that with bin/magento indexer:reindex or configure that command in your crontab to be executed on a set interval. If you configure all cronjobs like the magento docs say and the following commands are executed nothing is reindexed:

bin/magento -q cron:run
php update/cron.php
bin/magento setup:cron:run

Please, provide the used version. If the problem is actual for a specific branch, please, specify it and be sure that the latest update was used.
