Motivation: making it easier to rework the build process as proposed in #583.
TODO:
(One exception: I didn't bother writing code to preserve the behaviour of baking the license into the top of the source files in
dist/. Bigger libraries like Lodash don't bother with this and we publish the LICENSE file to npm; I don't see the need for it to be baked into source files.)
