We do not support every existing authentication method - esp. when it comes to plugins. The driver only supports the regular password based one and the old password from before. What are you using?

I'm trying to use regular password authentication although the server also has a plugin for unix socket authentication. When I disable the plugin, it still does not allow me to log in though.

We are also using MariaDB 10 on Ubuntu 14.04 with Go 1.4 and we never had this problem...

That is interesting. I installed mariadb-server on a bare Ubuntu 15.04 from main repositories (I did NOT add MariaDB's own repos). Then there is this problem.

@arnehormann Do you have any debugging tips for that?

Try tcpdump or wireshark first (tcpdump -i eth1 port 3306 -s 0 -x -n -tttt > tcpdump.out).
This is something you can best see on the wire.
