field cleared when invalid character is typed in input type=number

In an input of type=number, type a valid number, say, 3.1 and then type any character that would render the input invalid. The result is that the input field is cleared. This should not occur, instead, the invalid input should be left as is so that the user has an opportunity to correct it: e.g.,
