How to install bash-language-server as a non global package?

I can't install bash-language-server as a global package because of permission issues. How can I install it as a non-global package (i.e., without -g flag) and still get the benefit?

@siddjain You can install it anywhere on your system that you like and then use the bashIde.path setting to point to that location (assuming you're using the vscode extension) :)

some instructions on how to set the bashIde.path would have been nice.

anyway I installed the extension in non-global mode and have set bashIde.path to
/Users/sjain68/.vscode/extensions/mads-hartmann.bash-ide-vscode-1.3.3/node_modules/bash-language-server/bin

but I get the dreaded error in VS Code:
Can't find bash-language-server on your PATH
