How to get archive from remote repo without init local repo?

Could you please give me a tip? Is there a way to retrieve an archive from remote repo without init local repo? I mean is there an API that implements this command:
git archive --format=tar --remote=git@gitlab.com:prefix/project.git --output "project.tar" master
